California's high-speed rail project just got a jolt of federal investment money.
California will get more than $900 million to engineer and build a high speed rail system. Those trains would move passengers between San Diego and Sacramento or San Francisco at 200 miles an hour.
Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein says the federal Department of Transportation awarded the money to California because its high speed rail project is ready to go. Earlier this year, California got more than $2 billion in federal stimulus money for high speed rail. Two years ago, California voters got the project on track by approving $10 billion in bonds.
The latest grant also pays for other rail projects, including engineering and permits to double-track Amtrak's Surfliner route between San Luis Obispo and San Diego, and "positive train control" — technology that automatically stops a train if an engineer misses a red light.
